Each year we study a subject of some type, perhaps a topic used as inspiration, a well-known tapestry weaver, or a technique, which will be selected by the members. Members have the opportunity to design and weave a tapestry on the subject and exhibit completed pieces at the next ANWG Annual Membership Meeting which is generally held in June.
The inspiration theme for 2024-2025 is “Inspired by Yakima” in honor of the location of the 2025 ANWG Conference. Try to use a “new to me” technique and share your learning with the group. Size suggestion is 12″ x 12” maximum so this is a doable project for everyone. The pieces will be shown at the next ANWG Conference in June 2025.
Yakima is a very interesting area with lots to offer for themes. If you like plants there are apples, hops, grapes and more. If you like mountains, Mt. Rainier is very picturesque. If you like stories about people and nations, the Yakima nation is close, and the history of the area is fascinating. If you like buildings, the new convention center just asks to be abstracted. If you like rivers, the Yakima River is downtown. Even the word “Yakima” would make a great tapestry. Let Yakima inspire you!
Design and complete a small tapestry (12” x 12” or smaller) with the theme of “Inspired by Yakima”. Pieces can be representational to abstract and anywhere in between.
Process: Each of us has our own process for designing and weaving pieces. Some people sketch, draw, paint, or otherwise prepare a plan for the completed work. Others just weave and let the muse guide them. Perhaps you use a cartoon or draw on the warp threads, or both, and/or there is another method that works for you. Please share this process with the group as you work on your piece, sharing inspiration, techniques, questions, concerns, and pictures. Each person can have a gallery for their pictures in the group.
