Fernie Spinners and Weavers

The Guild was formed to promote hand spinning and weaving in the Elk Valley.  Our membership fee is $10.00, paid in January at our Annual General Meeting.  Regular meetings are held at the Fernie Arts Station on the second and fourth Mondays of each month, except July and August.

Our History:
On November 29th, 1982, four weavers met to discuss founding a Guild.  They were:  Teresa Hwang, Ida McAleer, Gayle Vallance and Rose Watson.  The first meeting, called for December 15, 1982, attracted 12 people.  These 12 brought spinning and weaving experiences and enthusiasm to our new Guild.  Since that meeting we have met each month for the past 27 years.
Our membership has ranged from a core of seven to a baker’s dozen as folks move into our area and then move on – each leaving some special legacy behind.  We have members with extensive knowledge of spinning, dyeing and weaving.  The focus of the Guild is to share this knowledge with each other, and to make raise community awareness of these fibre arts.
